Chapter 16
Damien
As I walk into the airport, my secretary falls into step with me as we make our way to my office, but then she halts me with new information.
âWhat do you mean heâs out?â I ask as I turn towards her abruptly, making her almost bump into me as she was walking seconds behind me with little space.
âHeâs injured and there doesnât seem to be any other pilot available to take his flight.â She says as she arranges the files in her grip. We may have to think of postponing the flight until further notice.
âWhat of the passengers? Have they already boarded?â I question, to which she nods, making me groan.
Itâs from been one bad news to another today. Iâm a bit flustered and worked up about it all. âHow did this happen? Where is he now?â
She pushes her glasses up the bridge of her nose. âHeâs in the infirmary. The nurses there are attending to him after one of the crews brought him in from the hanger.â
I know where that is and I make my way there as fast as I can. Pushing the doors open, I come face to face with five people in the room.
There is Billy, who should be preparing for a flight but is lying on the bed. There is also his wife I think and then there are the nurses who attended to him. And then HER.
Jacqueline Davis.
âWhat are you doing here?â I snap even though I donât mean for it to come out as such. She is the one I slept with one night ago. Iâve been seeing her around, since yesterday but this is the first time we are talking though.
She sighs visibly before she answers. âGood morning Mr. Grant. Iâm here because the pilot whoâs supposed to be accompanying us on our trip to France is indisposed at the moment.â
I glance from her to the man lying in the bed and the woman who catered to him.
âHow is he? Will he be able to fly?â I direct my question to one of the nurses.
She walks around him to put away some equipment. âHe is be able to fly.â The equipment she was putting away made a clunking sound as it hit the table.
I smile, as this is at least good news today. âThatâs great, isnât it?â When I glance around, I notice Iâm the only one happy about this.
The nurse gives me a stare like I am joking. âI said he can fly, but he wonât be able to fly now,â she clarifies and I feel my smile subside as she continues. âHe has a fever. What do you think would happen if you let him fly?â
I sigh as I rub my temples, âYou should have made sure you were healthy before you reported for work,â I caution, which his wife seems to agree with.
âThatâs what Iâve been saying this entire time, but he doesnât seem to want to listen. You could have gotten seriously hurt. What then?â She is close to bursting into tears.
